The iPad 2 is still a mystery, but it doesn’t stop us donning our investigative journalism hats and searching the internet for more details about the illusive tablet and today’s latest thinking comes from beta testers of the next iOS upgrade, 4.3.
Now we reported earlier today that the home-screen button was being considered as redundant and will be removed from the latest iPad and iPhone – now this might seem like madness to us, but if it was true what would replace it ?
Well, according to details from the latest incarnation of the iOS operating system, which just so happens to be ready for a February launch date, the same date that the iPad 2 might be outed to the public.
A set of new Apple gestures is being planned – these include “pinch to home-screen”, “swipe to reveal multitasking tray” and the option to decide whether to use the side switch on the iPad for mute or screen lock rather than being dictated by Apple.
There are some promising new features coming to iOS 4.3 which include GSM devices being able to function as a mobile hotspot, AirPlay support for third-party native and web apps and the aforementioned multi-touch gestures.
There are also said to be a number of live video effects like x-ray and thermal camera for both video capture and FaceTime. Less excitingly the update will also see full screen banner ads delivered to the iPad.
These new details certainly point to the fact that the new iOS 4.3 will more than likely be used for the iPad 2 – with iOS 5 left for the expected iPhone 5, which is being touted for a late summer reveal. Well, that’s the current thinking anyway.
The iOS 4.3 will also be pumped out to all iOS devices as part of Apple ever impressive unified theory.
What do you think of the new gesture? Would you want to see the home button removed? Let us know below.
